Hi forum.
Somewhat related to @nishitaparmar’s thread - Do you need more Local Government Data? - how widespread is the use of OpenStreetMap in local government in WA (either as a simple basemap or as a source of data)?
For those LGAs that do use it, do you add any of your open data back to OSM? If not, have you considered doing so?
Dave
Great point on OpenStreetMap (OSM) in WA local govs! Some LGAs use it as a basemap, but contributing data back is rare. I work on GIS from a tidy home office with home improvement solutions. Any OSM users here?
This is just my own personal opinion, but I use OSM data as an option of last resort.
Whilst it’s usually embedded within a lot of apps automatically, it can make it very convenient. When using it internally that can be great…
It’s a great source of information, especially when there are locals who are enthusiastic about adding relevant POI’s or locally known locations.
The main issue I have is when using it on a public interface. As it is crowd sourced, over time I have found a number of locations that are mis-labelled or worse, just obscene names used for trails, which you don’t often see until you get in close.
I’m just cautious when using it that’s all.
